972 participants at the Vienna Chess Open

The Vienna Chess Open 2019 started on Saturday with 972 participants from 57 countries. Most players (382) are from Austria, followed by 182 from Germany, 29 from Korea and also from the Netherlands. 401 players are participating in the A-tournament, amongst them 19 great-masters and 42 international masters. 113 Austrians are playing for the title of the national champion. The favourites in the open class are GM David Shengelia, GM Stefan Kindermann and last years champion Nikolaus Stanec. The leading woman is WGM Regina Theissl-Pokorna, followed by Veronika Exler, Anna-Lena Schnegg and Anna-Christina Ragger. (Photo: Peter Kranzl)
